Learning Resources

Below are a select number of learning resources freely available on the web to supplement revision and tuition. Ask your tutor for further recommendations.

  • www.sqa.org.uk — The site of the exam body, the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
A useful place to start is by downloading their 'Your Exams' booklet, which describes the exams process and has tips on how to prepare. Specimen question papers are on this site, and for parents of younger students there is guidance and specimen papers for 5-14 National Assessments.
  • www.hsn.uk.net — A very useful free resource for people taking Highers.
Contains excellent, well-structured revision notes for the most common Highers subjects, including Maths, English, Chemistry, Physics and Computing. We recommend using it to support your class notes.
  • www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/education/bitesize — BBC Bitesize, a revision tool for people doing Standard Grades and Highers.
It has test papers which it marks for you, great for revision and confidence boosting. If you're doing Higher, go to the "Hot Links" section for plenty of additional web resources.
  • www.leckieandleckie.co.uk — The publisher of past papers for Standard Grades, Intermediate I and II, Higher and Advanced Higher.
Find out here if past papers are published in your subjects.
  • www.mind-mapping.co.uk/make-mind-map.htm — An explanation of how to construct a 'mind map', an alternative way of revising.
If you're finding during revision that there seems to be too much information to take in, mind mapping may help you order your notes and therefore retain more of the detail of the subject.

What parents and students say about us

students say …

Tutoring helped to push me and make me work harder to realise my potential.
Duncan (Dalry)

My tutor supplied me with plenty of exercises, including some useful ones he came up with himself. He was always friendly and regularly gave me encouragement, as well as realistic manageable targets for me to aim for. I got an A in the final exam. I'm very grateful to my tutor and Edinburgh Tutors.
Michelle (Ravelston)

Just want to let you know that Jonathan achieved his 3 A's and is over the moon. Obviously we're thrilled and just want to congratulate David on his outstanding tutoring in Biology. Last summer Jonathan was sitting on a C at AS and David has brought him up to an A grade in all 5 modules. We couldn't have asked for better! You have a very special student there and we wish him enormous success in his field of medicine.

I would like to let you know how pleased we were with Gavin's work. Despite having to study for exams himself he was committed, well prepared and enthusiastic in his work with Louise, and has helped her focus and come to grips with areas of both Maths and Chemistry. She is now more confident she can do well in her exams.
